The Maoists in Colombia and Peru against Salvador Allende: a local chapter of the socialism global split

Abstract

Hand in hand with the studies on the Cold War, historiography has open a fertile field of study on international connections and their relevance to explain the development and fall of Salvador Allende in Chile (1970-1973); however, this studies have privileged an interpretation of the bipolar world, dismissing the role of the People’s Republic of China as a third axis within the world conflict and his impact in Latin America. Based on the foregoing, the main objective of this paper is analyzing to what extent the criticisms that the pro-Chinese parties made to the socialist government of Chile responded to the geostrategic Chinese interest in the region, or if they whether rate to a political tactic motivated by their own interests. To find out, we will made a comparative study within two Maoist parties, in Colombia and Peru, who will take us to write an alternate historical account about the “Chilean road to socialism”.
