“Alexander von Humboldt’s Scientific Achievaments”
Abstract
Due to his extensive scientific work, his untiring effort to forge a holistic view of the world and his design to combine knowledge with ethical principles, Baron Alexander von Humboldt was raised to the rank of "last universal genius". After a short overview of his achievements, the article deals with the factors which made then possible, the reasons which lead to their fragmentation and oblivion in the century after his death as well as with their revaluation since the mid 20th century. The author argues the difficulty, even impossibility of recreating a scientific approach which emerged out of a mixture of Enlightenment and German romanticism, emphasizing, at the same time, the necessity to regain the humanitarian and ethical principles that guided the scientific work of Alexander von Humboldt.Downloads
