“Nation and Gender in Revolutionary Mexico: La India bonita and Manuel Gamio”
Abstract
This article examines the relationships between gender and nationalism in Mexico during the 1920's. Though many insighful articles have been written around the topic of nationalism and national imaginary, less attention has been paid to understand how ideas of the nation and the women’s question were constructed simultaneously in the history of Mexico. Through the examination of a beauty contest that took place in Mexico as part of the Centenary festivities organized in 1921 by the revolutionary government, this article proposes some ideas to investigate how intellectuals after the 1910 Revolution thought the issues of gender, ethnicity and nation.Downloads
